The Art and Design Department at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, is one of 16 academic departments in the College of Liberal Arts and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). Its primary purpose is to prepare students in the major for careers in art and design and related fields. The department offers a BFA in three concentrations: graphic design, photography and video, and studio art, and supports three minors (art history, photography and video, studio art), including a joint minor with the Computer Science Department in Computing for Interactive Arts. The Art and Design program consists of approximately 240 majors, 100 minors, and also offers courses that fulfill GE requirements to the general university population. There are 11 full-time tenure-line faculty, 11-14 part-time lecturers per term, and 7 full-time staff positions. All of these personnel use the Art and Design studios and educational workspaces as active components of their teaching programs. The hands-on instructional opportunities supported by these facilities are essential to the college's academic mission.
